Who Needs First Aid in the Healthcare Setting

Why Healthcare Professionals Need First Aid & CPR Certification

Under WorkSafeBC Occupational Heath and Safety regulations, employers in healthcare and medical environments must ensure adequate first aid coverage is available in the workplace at all times. Healthcare facilities, dental clinics, care homes, home care agencies, and medical offices are responsible for ensuring workers have access to trained first aid attendants and appropriate emergency response procedures.

Emergencies can happen at any moment. From cardiac arrest and choking incidents to falls, seizures, and medical emergencies, healthcare workers are expected to respond quickly and effectively.

  • Long-Term Care & Assisted Living Facilities

Care aides, healthcare assistants, support staff, and supervisors are often required to maintain valid first aid and CPR certification while caring for residents.

  • Home Care & Community Support Services

Home support workers, caregivers, and community health staff need first aid and CPR training to safely respond to emergencies while working independently with clients.

  • Dental Clinics & Dental Offices

Dental assistants, hygienists, administrative staff, and dental professionals benefit from certification to respond confidently during medical emergencies in clinical settings.

  • Medical Clinics & Physician Offices

Clinic staff, medical office assistants, and healthcare workers are commonly required to maintain current first aid certification as part of workplace safety protocols.

  • Hospitals & Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare workers in patient care and support roles are expected to maintain emergency response skills and valid CPR certification.

  • Rehabilitation & Therapy Centres

Physiotherapy clinics, rehabilitation centres, and wellness facilities often require certified staff who can respond to medical emergencies and injuries.
